Chemical Engineer

  • Provides engineering expertise and support for day-to-day support and Operation of Facilities and Projects.
  • Provide process design and system engineering support for a variety of process systems.
  • Development, review and analysis of process flowsheets.
  • Evaluates chemical impacts on process operations, effects on installed equipment, chemical compatibility, and potential generation of reaction by-products.
  • Determines requirements for design, ensure delivered systems meet requirements and troubleshoot problems.
  • Identify hazards in process designs and process safety controls to mitigates.
  • Lead and participate in design and safety reviews.
  • Provide technical assistance in support of continued operational management and maintenance of assigned systems.
  • Assist in development of operating procedures, chemical management systems, and other management strategies.
  • Support, direct and perform system testing as required.
  • Support development and maintenance of process design basis documents for the system (e.g., P&IDs, PFDs, mechanical drawings, calculations, operating procedures, applicable parts of the documented hazard and accident analyses, vendor submittals).
  • Prepare project plans and manage designs and equipment procurements within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Perform readiness reviews, compliance assessments and other oversight activities.

Criticality Safety Engineers support the development, review, and implementation of criticality safety documentation to assist engineering and operations in preventing inadvertent, self-sustaining nuclear chain reactions by analyzing normal and abnormal conditions for new or changed fissile/fissionable material operations.

  • Provide technical assistance in developing criticality safety documents and analyses, criticality safety controls, and related technical support documentation.
  • Ensure that the development of criticality safety documentation complies with requirements and as necessary, applicable controls are implemented in field procedures.
  • Perform modeling using MCNP or SCALE.
  • Provide general guidance on the implementation of criticality safety limits, the physics of criticality and criticality accidents, training and assistance to operational personnel.
  • Conduct Criticality Safety Program assessments and maintain program manuals.
  • Mentor and oversee the work of junior level analysts.

I&C Engineer

  • Develop initial design concepts.
  • Analyze various design requirements and recommends possible solutions or alternate constructions.

Licensing Engineer

  • Prepare and validate documents/submittals supporting a license application under 10 CFR 50 and/or 10 CFR 52.
  • Perform analysis, calculations, and develop designs in support of the assigned facility and engineering programs and projects.
  • Prepare and review responses to NRC Requests for Additional Information (RAIs), as well as other correspondence and licensing submittals to the NRC.
  • Ensure that licensing work products are complete, accurate, and in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and guidance and industry codes and standards; and project licensing strategy, procedures, guidance, and commitments.
  • Perform technical and quality reviews of a wide array of engineering and technical products.  Advanced experience levels also perform reviews of non-typical documents and situations.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment and professional rigor in the performance of all analyses and assigned tasks.
  • Support the resolution of complex issues and processes to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements for assigned activities.
  • Provide direction and technical regulatory guidance to cross-functional team members for complex issues to resolve licensing strategy, implementation, or interpretation issues.
  • Coordinate and support interface with clients and provide support to clients.
  • Support interactions with industry groups (e.g., NRC, NEI, EPRI etc.).

Mechanical Engineer

  • Understand industry codes and standards, and use computer software and applications associated with engineering assignments.

Nuclear Engineer

  • Designs, develops, and tests nuclear equipment and systems: monitor testing, operations, and maintenance of nuclear reactors.
  • Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define most economical uses of nuclear material and safest means of waste products disposal (nuclear-fuels reclamation engineers, nuclear-criticality engineers, nuclear-fuels, research engineers, or nuclear decontamination engineers).
  • Assists in the design of nuclear systems for a radio isotope design/build project.  Support the design and development of mechanical systems in a high radiation/harsh chemical environment.
  • Review specifications, drawings, and vendor equipment documentation from both within the discipline as well as from other disciplines for compliance with project requirements and actively seeks resolution.
  • Plans, coordinates, or prepares equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment.
  • Coordinates engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other groups.
  • Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
  • Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design.
  • Ensures adherence to Industry codes and standards as well as department practices and procedures.
  • Works with Technical managers, engineers, designers, and fabrication vendors to design and analyze complex piping systems and components.
  • Performs oversight of nuclear programs and processes.

Nuclear Safety (NS) Engineers provide administrative and technical expertise for the development, review, and implementation of nuclear safety documentation and related technical support documentation.

  • Prepare and revise NS analysis, calculations, technical safety requirements, and safety basis documentation.
  • Provide expert analysis and assistance for NS matters.
  • Prepare engineering studies and report preparation.
  • Perform engineering computer modeling as assigned (e.g. MACCS, PostMax, GENII, ARCON, ALOHA, Hot Spot).
  • Prepare Safety Basis Changes, NS Evaluations, Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) Determinations and USQ Screenings.
  • Document site characterization, hazard identification, accident description, event progression, and controls selection. This includes, but is not limited to, internal operational events and external events (both including fires, explosions, and loss of confinement) and natural phenomena events (including seismic and high wind/tornado).
  • Evaluate existing site operations, modifications, and new operations for compliance with the Safety Basis and Nuclear Safety codes and standards, federal, state, or local statutes.
  • Review, check, and comment on safety analysis documents and calculations prepared by peer engineers and subcontractors.
  • Perform inspections, identify and assess hazards; develop recommendations on Nuclear Safety issues.
  • Develop Nuclear Safety procedures and guides.
  • Conduct Nuclear Safety Program assessments, facility Readiness Assessments (RAs), and Implementation Verification Reviews (IVRs).
  • Ensure that the developed nuclear safety documentation complies with requirements and as necessary, applicable controls are implemented in field procedures.
  • Work with Engineering and Operations to provide technical guidance to project personnel.
  • Mentor and oversee the work of junior level analysts.

Radiological Protection Engineers assist and support management in the development of the Radiation Protection Program core functions by evaluating, monitoring, and interpreting levels of radiation and contamination in accordance with the DOE approved Radiation Protection Program.   Other duties include but are not limited to:

  • Development, review and delivery of Radiological Worker training and Radiological Control Technician training.
  • Determining appropriate preventative measures to limit exposure of site personnel, including data collection, analysis, and ensuring that site operations are conducted in accordance with contractual, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participating in planning and optimizing ALARA design and control to support Environmental Remediation and Waste Management related to measurements, controls, ALARA evaluations, and data interpretations.
  • Communicating status of measurements exceeding safe levels and recommending engineered controls.
  • Contributing to the modification of policies and procedures to enhance radiological safety.
  • Providing interpretative guidance regarding radiation levels and appropriate controls.
  • Supporting Radiation Protection functional areas such as sampling, data capture, entry and analysis support, documentation, procedure update, report preparation, or related areas.
  • Preparing survey and release plans for facilities and equipment.
  • Developing Final Status Surveys based on historical site assessment, characterization survey report, radiological instrumentation technical data, and current radiological survey data.
  • Evaluating materials and equipment for unrestricted release.
  • Development and maintenance of internal and external dosimetry program.
  • Performing personnel dose assessments.
  • Providing technical guidance in interpreting standards.
  • Providing technical guidance in selecting anti-C clothing.
  • Assisting in the development of corrective actions in response to radiological problems.
  • Performing audits and assessments of functional areas of the radiological program.
